Insecticide-treated mosquito nets are an effective tool in the fight against malaria. A long-term study published in February 2022 and co-authored by the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) confirms that the use of mosquito nets in Tanzania significantly increases children's chance of survival.
The 2020 edition of the World malaria report takes a look back at key events and milestones that helped shape the global response to the disease over the last 2 decades – a period of unprecedented success in malaria control that saw 1.5 billion cases and 7.6 million deaths averted. This year’s report also features a special section on malaria and the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as a detailed analysis on progress towards the 2020 milestones of WHO’s global malaria strategy

Every year, the Swiss Malaria Group invites its members and selected guests to the Technical Exchange meeting. The purpose of the annual meeting is for members and guests to update each other on ongoing and future projects in the field of malaria, exchange knowledge and know-how as well as to facilitate and initiate potential collaborations. The theme of this year's exchange was "The Swiss contribution to strengthen global health systems - learning from Swiss expertise on malaria and beyond". All the presentations of the speakers are now available online.

After a 3-year study of trends and future projects, WHO’s Strategic Advisory Group on Malaria Eradication has released a detailed report of its key findings and recommendations. The report builds on an executive summary published in August 2019. Members of the advisory group highlight 6 areas in the report that would underpin a successful malaria eradication effort.
This year's World Malaria Day is marked by major advances in the fight against malaria, with more than 7 million lives saved and over 1 billion cases prevented in the last two decades. At the same time, COVID-19 threatens this progress and immediate action is required to save lives. According to a model calculation, an increase of 105,000 malaria deaths, mainly children, is predicted due to COVID-19.

The World Malaria Report 2019 shows that the scourge of malaria continues to strike hardest against pregnant women and young children in Africa. Scaling up efforts to reduce cases and deaths among these two populations would provide a significant boost in the fight against malaria.
